There was a chill in the summertime air; it was brittle and hollow and smelled like winter, or at least the closest thing to winter I had smelled since arriving on Tobago.
I adjusted the volume on my black Hitachi 8 transistor radio, the one someone had left behind in the apartment, and turned the dial past waves of endless static; the noise funneling into the emptiness of my thoughts: my kids were gone.
